2014 Toyota RAV4: lower costs, more kit

The original compact SUV, the Toyota RAV4, is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. Now in its fourth incarnation, the model continues to deliver a winning blend of style, space, and ruggedness – strengths that have been enhanced for 2014 with a raft of updates.

For the first time, customers will be able to pair  the efficient 2.0-litre 122bhp D-4D diesel engine with all-wheel drive. The new RAV4 2.0 D-4D AWD is available in Icon and Invincible grades and when mated to the model’s six-speed manual transmission, returns up to 53.3mpg on the combined cycle. CO2 figures are impressively low, at 137g/km, placing the RAV4 in road tax Band E.

For 2014, Icon and Invincible spec models are equipped as standard with Toyota Touch 2, an updated version of Toyota’s touchscreen-operated multimedia system. The system comprises Bluetooth for hands-free phone calls and sending and receipt of text messages; a rear-view camera; vehicle information, including trip data, climate control profile; and management of settings for door locking and lighting. Toyota Touch 2 benefits from a new high-resolution screen that uses four times as many pixels as the outgoing ‘Toyota Touch’ system, ensuring a crystal clear display.

Icon and Invincible models are available with Toyota Touch 2 with Go. The optional system adds a plethora of extra functions to Toyota Touch 2, including full map navigation, equipped with real-time traffic notifications and safety camera warnings. In the event of an emergency, the system will give direct access to the emergency services or AA breakdown assistance, automatically providing exact vehicle location details on the display screen.

Touch 2 with Go is the first system of its kind to feature  Google Street View™ and Panoramio™ – this provides imagery of the vehicle’s location or a chosen location to help pinpoint and recognise destinations.

Ensuring the system scores on fun too, a range of applications are available free for 12 months. The apps can be obtained by completing a quick registration process via Toyota’s customer web portal.

In addition to Toyota Touch 2, the 2014 RAV4 is awash with extra equipment. Icon models adopt keyless entry and easy push-button start as standard, together with new two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels – fitted to the two-wheel as well as all-wheel drive cars. This builds on an equipment list that also includes dual-zone climate control automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control, DAB digital tuner, heated retractable door mirrors and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. All RAV4 models are equipped as standard with a space saver spare wheel

Invincible customers now have the choice of black or a new beige leather seat upholstery, while front and rear parking sensors have been made standard, ensuring protection from car park dings.

A new metallic Mahogany paint finish has been introduced.
