Geneva motor show: FT-86 draws near

img_2973

If the Auris HSD represents Toyota’s hybrid technology expertise, then there’s one car at the Geneva motor show that confirms the company’s commitment to producing driver-focused performance cars: the FT-86 Sports Concept.

Our whirlwind trip to the show gave us the chance to see the car first-hand  – provided we could push our way through the crowds, of course! Clearly, there is unrelenting interest in the concept, and it’s not just us who think so.

The reasons? Try a front-engine, rear-wheel drive format wrapped in a lightweight, compact body. If this sounds familiar, then it’s meant to. The FT-86 is the spiritual successor to the iconic Corolla AE-86 and draws inspiration from the legendary MR2, Celica and Supra. That’s some heritage.

Make no mistake, though, the FT-86 isn’t just about looking back to the past. This is a striking vision of the future that comes complete with a free-revving 2.0-litre petrol engine, a six-speed manual gearbox and 19-inch alloy wheels. While no more details have been announced, we promise to keep you updated on the latest developments when they happen.

Update 5/3/10: we’ve now added more images of the FT-86 and other stars from Geneva to Flickr.

  2. Absolute stunning car i currently have an 06 plate celica with an uprated gt4 engine inside though this car is a definate buy does anyone know how much it will go on sale for and when can we put a deposit on to get it pre ordered ?

  3. Im glad to see toyota are thinking about introducing another sports car into their range, incorporating features from other old legendary Toyota’s. I work for a Toyota dealership and am constantly asked if ‘Toyota’ will be introducing a new Celica or Mr2 any time soon. I think toyota are missing out on a huge chunk of market not producing sports/performance models in recent years. I also thought the ‘T Sport’ brand and image/badge in itself was fantastic and would love to see this brought back into uk flagship models, it was so much more appealing and eye catching than the too commonly used ‘sr’ badge on any toyota that comes with alloy wheels. Come on Toyota you can still make performance models as well as green cars! Looking forward to the FT-86!

  4. 5. Please bring back the Auris SR180! There is far too much focus on the “Green” issue. The 2.2 D4D 177bhp with 400nm of torque was a fantastic engine!!

    1. Hi Arash,

Glad to hear you’re an SR180 fan. Toyota has no plans to reintroduce a high-power diesel ‘sport’ edition Auris at this time, but should that change, you’ll be the first to know! Thanks.

  6. About time that Toyota brought out a new coupe. I have been waiting 7 years for one. When will it begin production???. I have read the 3 comments made. I don’t want a 6.9 V8 or 4.5 V8. A 2 V6 will do me fine. I own a 2003 Celica at present and I am seriously thinking of changing. I don’t want another brand so come on TOYOTA get on your bike and produce the car I want.

  7. the toyota ft-86 its truely a super sports car but the ft86 needs more power it should have at least have a V8 6.9 LITRE ENGINE WITH TWIN TURBO CHARGERS AND COLOUR FULL SATTALITE NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND ALL THE CONTROLS SHOULD BE ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND SPEEDO METER SHOULD BE PROJECTED ON THE SCREEN PLUS THE FT-86 SHOULD ALSO HAVE TWIN EXHAUST SYNERGY HYBRID BADGE ON THE BODY. INFACT TO SUMMIT UP I THINK ALL TOYOTA MODELS SHOULD BE HYBRID AND OZONE FREINDLY THE TOYOTA RAV4 ITS EXCELLENT IT GIVES THAT EXECUTIVE FEEL AND THE ELEGANCE TOUCH AGAIN THE RAV4/TOYOTA LANDCRUISER SHOULD HAVE V8 5.9 LITRE ENGINE AND IT SHOULD TWIN EXHAUST AND TWIN TURBO THE LANDCRUISER VX SHOULD HAVE A V12 7.7 LITRE ENGINE THE WITH TWIN TURBO AND TWIN EXHAUST THE YARIS SHOULD HAVE 1.9 LITRE VVTI TWIN EXHAUST AND TWIN TURBO AS FOR THE AYGO AND IQ THEY SHOULD GET UPGRADED TO 1.7 LITRE 5 DOOR HATCH TWIN EXHAUST AND TWIN TURBO AND THE TOYOTA VERSO AND COROLLA VERSO THEY SHOULD GET 4.9 LITRE V8 TWIN EXHAUST AND TWIN TURBO AND THE AURIS AND AURIS HYBRID IT SHOULD HAVE 3.9 LITRE V6 TWIN OVER HEADCAM AND TWIN EXHAUST TWIN TURBO AND THE AVENSIS AND CAMRY THAT SHOULD HAVE 5.7 LITRE V8 TWIN EXHAUST AND TWIN TURBO PLEASE PASS MY COMMENTS TO HQ JAPAN OFFICE.

  8. Nice to see the FT-86 but when will Toyota give us a green performance car? There’s nothing in the range to match the 50+mpg diesel coupes from BMW, VW and Audi. A Celica D4D or hybrid to take on the Scirocco would be a start.

  9. Superb looking car just a shame that they won’t put the 4.5 V8 diesel engine in out of the new Land Cruiser. That would give the car the sound and the go that it really deserves with the added bonus of semi practical fuel economy. Exterior looks spot on as for the dashboard improvements needed here.

      1. Hi Gary,

The FT-86 is still in the concept stage of development, so details of grades and pricing are not yet available.
The production version is scheduled for 2012, and we will update the blog as soon as more information is revealed at the Geneva motor show.

        Thanks.
