The first thing you’ll notice about the 2016 RAV4 is the sleek new look.

New LED-equipped headlamps, upper and lower grilles, fog lamps and a revised lower valance (on Business Edition models and above) simplify the front end design, and reflect the latest Toyota look also seen on new Auris and Yaris.

The reshaped ‘nose’ around the upper front grille is one of the key updates to the 2016 car. It’s been de-cluttered and smoothed out, to give a more cohesive appearance.

The front Toyota emblem has slightly increased in size, to allow for Dynamic Radar Cruise Control functionality – an element of the Toyota Safety Sense package now available on the RAV4.

…while the reshaped lower tailgate and tailgate garnish further emphasise the RAV’s solid stance. The rear bumper comprises a larger painted section, while the revised rear fog lamps and under body valance (on Business Edition models and above) strengthen the look.

Rear privacy glass is a standard feature on Business Edition Plus models and above. All grades benefit from a stylish shark-fin antenna.

The new RAV4 Hybrid is marked out from the other models by the blue-tinted Toyota emblem, and Hybrid badging on the front wing and on the tailgate.

All grades of new RAV4 will have new alloy wheel designs, with differing styles dependent on grade: 17-inch designs on Active, Business Edition and Business Edition Plus models, with alternate 18-inch designs available on Icon and Excel models.

One of areas Toyota engineers focused on in updating the RAV4 is the sensory quality of the interior.

The ambient lighting, materials and the layout of the gear shift area and cup holders have all been revised and improved. A storage area for sunglasses has been added into the interior lighting cluster above the windscreen.

There have been improvements to the dials and the addition of a 4.2-inch colour multi-information display in the instrument binnacle, which offers information including navigation instructions, energy usage, vehicle information and customisation options. It’s all coordinated with the central 7-inch Toyota Touch 2 touch screen multimedia system.

New Toyota RAV4 specifications

All 2016 RAV4 models benefit from 17-inch alloy wheels, a space saver spare wheel, LED daytime running lights, electric mirrors and manual air-conditioning.

Compared with the outgoing RAV4, 2016 Active models get the Toyota Touch 2 7-inch touch screen, DAB radio, Bluetooth, cruise control, six speakers and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

Business Edition models add front and rear lower valances, front fog lamps, Go Navigation, retractable mirrors, rear-view camera, dual-zone climate control, rain sensor, dusk sensor and auto-dimming mirrors. Business Edition Plus models add LED front and rear lights, power rear door and smart entry and start.

Navigation is standard on Business Edition and Business Edition Plus models only.

Icon adds leather & Alcantara seats with an Alcantara dash insert, heated seats and an electronically adjustable drivers seat with lumbar support. On top of that, 18-inch machined alloy wheels and LED lights front and rear are standard.

Finally the range-topping Excel model has full leather seats, front and rear parking sensors and roof rails as standard.
