The 2014 Dakar Rally is under way in South America and the Toyota Hilux is once again set to star in the iconic motorsport event.
Giniel de Villers, winner of the 2009 Dakar and a podium finisher last year, leads the pack of 45 Toyotas taking part in the 15-day, 5,800-mile odyssey in a Hilux prepared by South Africa’s Imperial Toyota.
Giniel and his team mate Dirk von Zitzewtiz finished the first day’s racing in 27th place after issues with their car’s power steering that necessitated a prolonged stop.
Meanwhile South African Leeroy Poulter took a highly creditable ninth position on his first day taking part in the Dakar.

We’ll be providing updates from the event as it progresses through Argentina and Chile, so stay tuned!
